Letterman is fine; he never was the “Family Values” type. Yes, he probably cheated on his girlfriend now wife. But at least he does go around claiming he is Mr. “Family Values” like some of our politicians (can you just see the grin on all “Fake News” reporters/ commentators and the Palin’s fringe). This has been a tough summer, for Dave, for our economy but at least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Sanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).
I totally agree with you. Letterman’s job is to crack jokes at topical events. If he didn’t make fun of the likes of Clinton and Spitzer, then he wouldn’t really be doing his job. Sure, he was taking part in the same actions he was mocking, but he wasn’t preaching about whether the acts were unethical or not. Then you have someone like Rev. Ted Haggard. He is very public in his support for the ban on same-sex marriage saying it’s a sexual sin, yet he (allegedly) solicited sex from a male prostitute and was eventually removed as leader of the New Life Church. Now THAT is what I consider hypocrisy.
My favorite hypocrite: Larry Craig. The former Senator from Idaho supported a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage but was infamous for his airport bathroom same sex solicitation.
At least, I think it’s hypocrisy. I supposed he could be propositioning men even though he thinks he shouldn’t and his support of banning gay marriage is what he thinks is right. Yuck.
Hello,
Waiting for the September LSAT scores to be released motivated my search of the internet for any an all things related to the LSAT, which is why I blog with you here today! With that said, in regards to the issue, I agree with you and would like to add that criticizing his “message” on the basis of his own personal character is considered a logical fallacy, is it not?
Secondly, a defense commonly used for Mr. Letterman is that as a comedian, it is his professional responsibility to make jokes and capitalize on the opportunities to increase ratings by discussing that which the public is most interested in, and I agree. However, this becomes interesting when the standard is applied to someone like Elliot Spitze, whom it can be argued that as a politician, it is his professional responsibility to take “action” against the ills of society. Any thoughts?

Trent,
Your supposedly “irrelevant” blogs are actually very illuminating and educating. Both the one about Polanski and this one shows some fine lawyering skills and gives prospective law students like us an idea of the nature of the practice that we’re going into. Really appreciate the effort, so please continue to post about such critical debates. Perhaps the next one could be about Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Haha.
Thank you,
Palash
Sorry, the guy is an A-hole, hypocrite or not.
I am not a fan of Sarah Palin, but he kept making cracks about her daughter, and that just goes beyond comedy etiquette. It was vicious and mean. Bristol Palin should be considered a separate entity from her mother, and therefore should be considered hands-off: same goes for Chelsea Clinton and Sasha and Malia Obama. He just kept going at that girl. Last time I checked, Bristol Palin wasn’t running for VP.
If he has a problem with Sarah Palin, he should make vicious jokes about Sarah Palin.
When you unnecessarily attack kids because of their parents actions or political views, then I have no respect for that person. I’m sure David Letterman would not like it if people made cracks about his son because of his personal extortion scandal. I know it will happen, because what comes around goes around. I don’t believe its right, whether its David Letterman’s son or Sarah Palin’s daughter.
If you don’t like a person’s actions, then attack the person, not their children. Children cannot choose their parents, therefore its pretty cruddy when people attack you because of your mother or father.
